Paramount Cinema

The Paramount Cinema (St Catherine St. West) changed its name to the Scotiabank Cinema in Spring 2007, which precipitated a rapid changeover of signage inside and outside the theatre. The sign now on display in the CJ building at Concordia is an interior ticket office sign with letters cut from medium-density fibreboard on an aluminum frame. We estimate that it was designed and built in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The sign required little to no repairs, but, given its curvature, it presented some problems in terms of display. (For obvious reasons, our own building regulations do not permit unguarded projections from the walls.) Facilities Management designed and built an ingenious protective railing which is functional but also strongly evocative of movie theatre ticket lines.
